Under the ACA, you are legally permitted to stay on your parents' health plan until you turn 26. But what happens on your 26th birthday?
The Warning Period
Coverage usually ends on the last day of your birth month. This event legally triggers a Special Enrollment Period for you. You have exactly 60 days to lock down your own coverage.
Your Immediate Options
- Ask HR: If your job offers benefits, tell HR you are aging out. You avoid the standard waiting period.
- Under $20k a year: Apply for Medicaid. It is highly likely you get it completely free.
- Freelance / Service job: Go to Healthcare.gov. Since you are 26, subsidies based on your income will likely make a solid Silver plan cost less than a Netflix subscription.
